2011 Pemón Health Summer Internship Program

About the Program

Pemón Health Inc. offers an internship to students looking to transform their passion for global health, education and economic development into social action. Interns will have the opportunity to:

  • Live and work in an indigenous village for up to two months
  • Work to maintain an agriculture program and waste management system
  • Conduct educational workshops in local schools
  • Host recreational activities for the community youth
  • Make lasting memories and friendships with villagers and other program interns
  • Develop interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Travel to remote communities for additional outreach

Applicants with demonstrated interest in a particular field are encouraged to design an independent initiative to be carried out during their time in Venezuela.

Program Coordinator

Duties:

  • Spring
    • Help select summer interns
    • Assist in the planning and preparation of summer initiatives
  • Summer
    • Live and work in an indigenous village, Urimán, in rural Venezuela for 6-8 weeks
    • Lead a group of college students in the implementation of preventive health initiatives
    • Promote a healthy and productive group dynamic
    • Foster productive community relations with an indigenous rural village
  • Fall
    • If possible, coordinate campus events as a representative

Time Commitment: March 2012 - December 2012

Eligibility

  • Must be an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university
  • Must be proficient in Spanish
  • Experiences abroad and in group settings preferred
  • Superb communication skills, organized, pro-active and flexible

Summer Intern

Duties:

  • Spring
    • Assist in the planning and preparation of summer initiatives
  • Summer
    • Live and work in an indigenous village, Urimán, in rural Venezuela for 6-8 weeks
    • Head an initiative (existing or new) and afternoon activities
    • Promote a healthy and productive group dynamic
  • Fall
    • If possible, become a campus intern

Time Commitment: March 2012 - December 2012

Eligibility

  • Must be an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university
  • Must be proficient in Spanish
  • Highly adaptable in an unfamiliar environment

Program Dates

Program dates change every year and are established during the spring in accordance with timelines set forth by village leaders and Pemón Health. General dates include a departure in early June and return in late July or early August for a total of 6-8 weeks. For example, below is the timeline used for Summer 2010:

  • June 14 : Arrival in Caracas, Venezuela
  • June 15: Arrival in Ciudad Bolivar
  • June 16. Arrival in Uriman
  • July 25: Departure from Uriman to Canaima*
  • July 27: Depart from Canaima To Bolivar and Bolivar to Caracas
  • July 29: Depart from Caracas, Venezuela

* At the end of each trip, groups may opt to visit Canaima National Park, home to Angel Falls, the longest waterfall in the world. This time can serve as a reflection period for the summer.

Program Coordinators: All costs (transportation and program fees) are covered in compensation for this commitment.
